Monika Sawka
M.A., M.Ed., Registered Psychologist, Canadian Certified Counsellor (C.C.C.)
My extensive work experience, humanistic perspective and familiarity with multiple therapeutic approaches gives me the confidence that I can help improve your quality of life, whatever your current situation might be. I offer clients a safe space with unconditional positive regard, confidentiality, and open communication targeted towards positive growth and change. I practice from a trauma-informed lens and follow a client-centered approach at the outset of which we decide together what treatment plan works best for you and your needs.
I am passionate about working with adults, adolescents, and children using strategies that are grounded in empathy and compassion. I believe that an effective psychologist will focus on being results driven while also being client focused. My specialties include Psychodynamic Therapy, Creative Art Therapy (drama and art), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Applied Behaviour Analysis.
I have worked in the therapy field for close to a decade since graduating with a Master’s Degree in Creative Arts Therapies from Concordia University in Montreal 2011. I subsequently obtained a second Master’s in Educational Psychology from McGill University. Through professional work in Montreal as well as Edmonton, I have gained considerable experience supporting people of all ages and diverse backgrounds, including individuals struggling with the effects of abuse, abandonment, trauma, depression, anxiety, self-harm, personality disorders, addiction, autism, ADD/ADHD, emotional/behavioral disorders, and gender variance.
