Ellen Klaver
M.Ed., Registered Psychologist
I am a Registered Psychologist completing the final year of my PhD in counselling psychology at the University of Alberta.
My passion is in the assessment and treatment of conditions rooted in emotion dysregulation including eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety, and insomnia in adolescents and adults. I received intensive training in assessment and evidence-based therapies, including Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).
While your therapist's formal training is important, so is their ability to connect with you as a person. I believe in being as authentic as possible in therapy. I know that being part of a client’s healing process is a privilege and I work to respect this privilege by providing a warm, caring, and collaborative environment. Creating a nonjudgmental space also allows room to explore and make sense of your emotions, thoughts, bodily sensations, and behaviours.
Therapy is constantly evolving with new research techniques being used to better understand and treat mental health conditions. I stay up to date with these improvements through additional training and connecting with other experts in the field to publish research on eating and sleeping, borderline personality disorder, emerging adulthood, and forensic psychology.
My PhD research focuses on tailoring an evidence-based treatment for insomnia to eating disorder populations. The aim is to focus treatment on the unique needs of each individual on a case-by-case basis, with the ultimate goal of improving treatment outcomes and reducing eating disorder relapse.
